Should you share other photographers' work on Pinterest or only post your own?
In the blog post, I'll be sharing whether or not it's a good idea to save pins by other photographers on your Pinterest profile or not. You will also learn a little bit about the Pinterest algorithm and how does it come into play in this particular case.
Today's topic got brought up during my first Q&A session I did on Ayalie Instagram account. It works pretty easily: you send me a question about Pinterest and how to use it as a wedding photographer, and I give you the answer. You can join in by sending me your question to my DM or fill in the form behind the button below.
Now, let's dive in: should you share other photographer's work on Pinterest or only post your own? My short answer to this question is yes you should. Here are 3 reasons why.
1 | It feels natural
On Instagram and Facebook, it wouldn't make sense to share other photographers' work on your profile. Yes, you certainly can do it once in a while, but regularly? Not really. Well, Pinterest is different.
When a Pinterest user lands on your profile, they wouldn't necessarily expect to see your photos only. After all, Pinterest is a place for inspiration. That's why it feels completely natural to have content on your profile that inspires you: artwork, travel inspiration, graphic design examples, interiors etc.
All of this content doesn't necessarily have to be completely related to what you do either. However, I encourage you to only share pins that can help you connect with the users. Content that gives them a little bit of an insight into who you are both as a photographer, an artist and a human being.
2 | You can help each other out
When you are just starting out on Pinterest, the easiest way to grow your profile and get your photos seen by more people is to get your pins shared by some of the more established accounts.
Again, sharing other people's work on Pinterest is completely natural, that's why this is not so hard to achieve. There's even a great tool you can use called Tailwind Tribes that makes this very easy (psst, you can use this link to get $15 off your Tailwind subscription).
3 | It can help you with the algorithm
If you have a brand new profile or are converting your existing one into a business one, you need to "tell" the Pinterest algorithm what your account is all about. To do that, you need to pin the kind of content you want your profile to be associated with.
Let's say that you have a board called "Wedding Portraits". When you pin both your photos and other photographers' work to that same board, the algorithm will "see" that. It will recognize that there's a connection between them. Because of that, it will start showing your photos to those users who already engaged with other pins that are on your board and therefore improve your reach.
