What does Hobbi mean for Pinterest?

As a Pinterest manager, it's part of my job to keep up with social media news. Truth be told, since Pinterest is still somehow overlooked by a majority of businesses worldwide, news about the platform hits the headlines only when something really big happens. This happened not that long ago when Facebook launched a new app called Hobbi. So what does that have to do with Pinterest you may ask? Well, the app looks like a Pinterest clone - more or less.

This is the description that can be found on the App Store: "Hobbi wants to help you document and remember the things you love to do. You can save photos of the projects you’re working on and the activities you love to do, whether it’s cooking, baking, DIY, arts & crafts, fitness or home decor. You can then organize your photos into visual collections in order to see the progress you’re making over time. You might just surprise yourself with how much you have done."

Does that make you think of something? In a way, Pinterest is just that - a platform to save photos and inspiration for whatever project you are planning next. But, it is also much more than just that. Pinterest first launched over 10 years ago and throughout all of this time, it's users were creating and publishing content on the platform. Now in 2020, there are more than 200 billion pins on the platform already, which is to state the obvious, an enormous number!

In my opinion, this is exactly why Pinterest won't just disappear because of Hobbi. Hobbi is a new app, one that may not even fully launch, and even though it was created by this tech giant, it still needs to accumulate all of that content that Pinterest already has. That's why Pinterest users won't just leave Pinterest and go elsewhere. If nothing else, it tells you that Facebook apparently considers Pinterest to be a big threat to them and is aware of the power the platform has because otherwise, they wouldn't even bother copying it.
